LYNDON CENTER, Vt. -- The University of Maine at Farmington baseball squad swept a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader against Lyndon State College 14-5, 5-3 today at Skip Pound Field.
The Beavers, who took three of four at Lyndon, improved to 4-8 overall and 3-3 in the NAC with a twinbill against Fisher College on tap Monday at Hippach Field. The first game is slated for a noon start. The Hornets slipped to 4-22-1 (1-12).
In the opener, Matt Levine (Pelham, NH) pounded out three hits and the foursome of Josh Garneau (South Portland, ME), Russ Schmelzer (Winthrop, ME), Phineas Peake (Penobscot, ME) and Kyle Shea (Bar Harbor, ME) had two hits and three RBI each as the Beavers recorded a 14-5 win over the Hornets.
Brian Morrison (Saco, ME) added a pair of hits for Farmington while Dan Hemdal (Nashua, NH) went the distance to get the victory. He allowed only two earned runs on eight hits while striking out eight and walking one.
Josh Fletcher had three hits for Lyndon and Jeremy Schichtle, the first of three LSC pitchers on the day, took the loss. He went one and one-third innings and allowed six earned runs on six hits while fanning none and walking two.
In the nightcap, Brian Jenkins (Gorham, ME) had three hits and Garneau added two as Farmington held off a late Lyndon State rally to walk off with a 5-3 win and a sweep of the NAC twin bill.
Craig Pendleton (Saco, ME) got the win, tossing seven innings while giving up one unearned run on seven hits. He struck out 11 batters and walked three.
Zach Maerder had two hits for Lyndon and Shane O'Donnell-Leach had a double in the contest. Sam Matthews pitched seven strong innings, allowing only one earned run on eight hits while striking out five and walking three.
