CASTLETON, Vt. -- The University of Maine at Farmington baseball squad was set down 20-4, 13-1 by Castleton State College in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader today.
With the wins, Castleton improved to 20-11 overall and 13-1 in conference play. Farmington fell to 4-14 (3-7 NAC). Castleton and Farmington will square off once again Friday afternoon in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
Kyle Brooks was 6 for 8 and drove in 10 runs to lead Castleton.
In the opener, Brooks collected four hits, drove in four runs and scored four more to pace the Spartan offense in the opener. Leading 2-0 after the first inning, Castleton plated four runs in the second to take a 6-0 lead. Ted Mills singled up the middle with one out to start the Spartan rally. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Brooks doubled to the right-centerfield gap, clearing the bases. Brooks later came around to score on Billy Manley's two-out single to leftfield.
Farmington cut the lead in half, scoring three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Josh Garneau (South Portland, ME) and Kyle Shea (Bar Harbor, ME) led off the inning with back-to-back doubles to plate the first run. After a foul out to the catcher, and a flyout to center field, Matt Levine (Pelham, NH) smacked a two-run homerun to right-center field to make it 6-3.
Castleton then scored 15 runs over the next three innings, including nine in the sixth to blow the game open. Jack Lancelin had a two-run single in the sixth and Aaron Zrenda ripped a two-run double with two outs in the inning to lead the rally.
Zrenda and Dan Conley each had three hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored, while David Raczka and Garrett Bissonnette each had two hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored. The Spartans pounded out 20 hits in the game, with every player having at least one.
Shea led the Beavers with three hits, while Garneau and Phineas Peake (Penobscot, ME) each went 2 for 4.
Rob Turner picked up the win, going the distance allowing four earned runs on 10 hits and three walks while striking out four.
In the second contest, Ken Cook pitched a complete-game six-hitter, striking out four and walking two to earn the win. Brooks once again led the offense, going 2 for 3 with a two-run double in the second inning and a grand slam in the fifth.
Billy Manley had three hits, including an rbi-double and Ted Mills was
3-for-3 with two runs batted in and three runs scored as Castleton collected 18 hits in the nightcap.
Brian Morrison (Saco, ME) scored Farmington's lone run as he singled and scored on a Peake double in the third inning. Peake led the Beavers with three hits.
