Baseball drops doubleheader to Bates

FARMINGTON -- The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team finished its regular season with 15-1, 5-4 defeats to Bates in non-conference action today at Hippach Field.

The Beavers (4-22) hold the fourth seed in the upcoming NAC tournament in Glens Falls, N.Y. Farmington is scheduled to face top-ranked Castleton State College at noon on Friday in the opening round. Tournament details The Bobcats (10-19) are slated to travel to the University of Maine at Presque Isle for a twinbill Wednesday with the first pitch tabbed for noon.

In the opener, Bates plated six runs in the opening frame and tacked on five more in the fourth on its way to a 15-1 rout.

Brian Jenkins (Gorham, ME) smacked a solo home run for the Beavers, while Mitch Bean (Old Orchard Beach, ME) and Josh Garneau (South Portland, ME) each doubled.

Mike Ciummei (Acton, MA) singled, homered and drove in four runs for the Bobcats with Rich Velotta (Fairfield, CT) singling twice and plating four runs and Gordy Webb (Hampden, ME) singling and doubling with three RBI. Noah Burke (Appleton, ME) and Alex Gallant (Bangor, ME) each clubbed a solo home run with Chris Burke (Andover, MA) rapping a single and two doubles.

Karl Alexander (Cambridge, MA) hurled a complete game in the win with a walk and nine strikeouts in a five-hitter.

Matt Levine (Pelham, NH) dropped the decision with 10 hits allowed, two walks and a strikeout over three innings.

In the second game, Tom Beaton (West Newbury, MA) singled home Tyler Maxwell (Coventry, VT) in the sixth inning to lift Bates to a 5-4 win.

Garneau singled, doubled twice and drove in a run for Farmington with Matt Judkins (Thomaston, ME) singling, doubling and driving in run.

Beaton finished with a three-hit day with Ciummei and Dave Farrell (Chatham, MA) each singling and doubling.

Chuck Murphy-Romboletti (Holyoke, MA) grabbed the win with two outs in relief. Paul Chiampa (Bryantville, MA) worked an inning for the save.

Will Griffiths (Mechanic Falls, ME) took the loss.
