Daniel's stroke gives field hockey win at Castleton

Box Score

CASTLETON, Vt. - Emma Daniel (Acton, Mass.) converted a penalty stroke one minute and 21 seconds into the first overtime period to propel the University of Maine at Farmington to a 3-2 victory over Castleton State College in North Atlantic Conference field hockey action today at Spartan Stadium.

Farmington (10-4 overall, 5-1 in NAC) is scheduled to host Thomas College Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Daniel's first marker of the season closed out an overtime filled with action. Farmington took the opening possession of the seven-on-seven period inside the striking circle where Elise Theriault (Winslow, Maine) unleashed a rocket from the right flank that evaded Castleton goalie Siobhan Whittemore (Springfield, Vt.) and appeared destined for the back of the cage but Samantha Funk (Cornwall, Vt.) was perfectly positioned for her second defensive save of the afternoon.

After setting up a penalty corner, Farmington's Samantha Webster (Dixfield, Maine) ripped a shot that Whittemore saved, then pounced on her own rebound and rifled a shot that was blocked. Emma Deans (Gorham, Maine) corralled the loose ball and had two shots at the goal, the first turned away by Whittemore and the second by Stephanie Paproski (Newtown, Conn.). After a yellow card forced the Beavers a player down, Hattie Laliberte (Guilford, Maine) and Theriault each had shots on the cage
that Whittemore saved, but on the second attempt, the senior goalie went to the ground, covering the ball and setting up Daniel for the penalty stroke.

Castleton (9-6, 3-3 NAC) led 2-1 until Laliberte potted the equalizer with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation. Laliberte redirected a rocket by Deans from the point. The Spartans had taken the lead eight minutes prior on Sarah Flore's (Springfield, Vt.) 13th goal of the season. Flore settled a penalty corner feed from Courtney Nolan (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) and blasted it into the back of the cage.

Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine) broke a scoreless tie just five minutes and 18 seconds into the game, redirecting another Deans drive from the points just inside the nearside post. Kealy Chipman (Bellows Falls, Vt.) tied the score four minutes later on her ninth goal of the season, redirecting a Nolan push pass.

The game featured several momentum swings, and Castleton nearly put the game out of reach early in the second half. Stephanei Bardell (Erwinna, Pa.) sent a perfect centering pass into the striking circle to set up Nolan and Farmington goalie Sarah Brown (Windham, Maine) for a one-on-one attempt. Brown came well out of her cage and kicked the ball out of harm's way just before Nolan could reach the pass. Just two minutes later, Nolan found herself alone with Brown yet again, and fired a rocket toward the far post that Brown made a fantastic kick save to keep the score knotted at 1-1.

Brown made 10 saves for Farmington while Whittemore turned away eight for the Spartans.

In yet another evenly matched contest, in what has proved to be an evenly matched series over the past six meetings, Castleton held a slight edge in shots (21-17) and penalty corners (13-6). Farmington has
now won four of the last six meetings between the two schools, with two games going extra time, and just one being decided by more than one goal.
