WENHAM, Mass. -- The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team opened its season with a 9-4 loss to Gordon College in non-conference action this afternoon at JTec White Field.
The Beavers (0-1) are scheduled to return to JTec White Field Saturday to take on Wentworth Institute of Technology. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
With Farmington holding a 4-3 edge, the Fighting Scots (3-4) used three hits and three errors to score six runs in the eighth inning to take the win. Stephen Myhren (Vernon, NJ) -- also the winning pitcher -- smacked a two-run double in the frame.
Matt Levine (Pelham, NH) collected a single and an RBI for the Beavers, while Steve Hutchinson (Beverly, MA), Jack MacVane (Mechanic Falls, ME), Russ Schmelzer (Winthrop, ME), Kyle Shea (Bar Harbor, ME) and Brett Wallingford (Sanford, ME) each had a base hit.
Brian Morrison (Saco, ME) tossed five scoreless innings for Farmington with two walks, two strikeouts and four hits allowed. Dale Winchenbach (Waldoboro, ME) took the loss with two hits, four runs allowed and a pair of strikeouts in an inning of work.
Myhren doubled twice for Gordon with Ben Davidson (Sterling, MA) doubling and driving in two runs.
Myhren hurled a complete game in the victory with six hits allowed, three walks and six strikeouts.
