Box Score 2 BANGOR -- Husson University swept the University of Maine at Farmington 1-0 and 11-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division baseball action today at Husson's Winkin Complex.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 9-10 and 2-0 in the conference, while the Beavers fell to 0-4 and 0-2 in the conference.The Eagles and Beavers will face off in another doubleheader Sunday at noon at Husson's Winkin Complex
The first game remaining scoreless for the next six innings thanks to quality pitching and defensive plays on both sides. The pitchers' duel continued through the second inning with the Eagles' Nate Adams (Frankfort, ME) throwing 35 pitches with 20 of them for strikes and Beaver Bill Ridge (South Portland, ME) throwing 21 pitches with 16 strikes.
Entering the bottom of the sixth, the score remained tied at zero thanks to a diving groundball stop by shortstop Ethan Guerette (Wales, ME). Guerette got the out at first, saving the Eagles from giving up a run and ending the inning.
The top of the seventh inning was action packed. With two outs and runners in scoring position for the Beavers, Adams got a huge out fanning Beaver Jack MacVane (Mechanic Falls, ME) to end the inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, Chase Daniels (Brewer, ME) got on base and Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, ME) came through with a walk-off single to right field, driving Daniels in from second giving the Eagles the 1-0 win.
Adams earned the win, pitching a complete game and giving up six hits, three walks, six strikeouts and no runs. Ridge was credited with the loss for the Beavers pitching 6.2 innings, giving up three hits, two walks, four strikeouts and one run.
In game two of the Saturday doubleheader, the Eagles opened up in the bottom of the first with a single by Vanidestine followed by a triple from Guerette. Vanidestine reached home from first base to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. Guerette came home from third on a wild pitch by Beaver pitcher Dale Winchenbach (Waldoboro, ME) making the lead 2-0 in favor of the Eagles. More runs kept coming for the Eagles in the first inning, the third coming on an error by Macvane allowing Jake Arthers (Belfast, ME) to come in from third after stealing third moments before making it 3-0 in favor of Husson.
In the top half of the third inning,Macvane led off with a double and was moved to third on a groundout, butwas left on third due to a combination of pitching and defense by Husson. The Eagles were able to extend their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning on an error by Beaver second baseman Steve Hutchinson (Beverly, MA), enabling Jason Smith to come home. Husson extended their lead when Jake Arthers (So., Belfast, ME) lead off with a double and then was driven in by a Tom Crews (Jr., Bangor, ME) double, making the lead 5-0. Crews advanced to third on a groundout and was able to steal home plate on the next play, giving the Eagles a 6-0 lead.
The Beavers got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Josh Garneau (South Portland, ME), driving in lead-off man Russ Schmelzer (Winthrop, ME).
Husson finished the game with a final score of 11-1. Chris Moris (Hampden, ME) pitched a complete game for the Eagles giving up just three hits and one earned run, one walk and one strikeout. His record improves to 2-1 on the season. Winchenbach was credited with the loss, going five innings, giving up five hits and four earned runs, walking three and striking out one.
