Box Score LEWISTON -- Bates College tipped the University of Maine at Farmington 4-1 in 10 innings in non-conference baseball action today at Leahey Field.
The Beavers fell to 0-7 with a trip to St. Joseph's College on tap Friday for a doubleheader. The first game is slated for a 2 p.m. start. The Bobcats stand at 9-3.
Bates' Jacob Simon (Waterford, CT) sent relief pitcher Ryan DiPompo's (Jay, Maine) first pitch deep over the left-field fence in the bottom of the 10th for a walk-off, three-run home run that gave Bates the victory.
After allowing Bates a run in the second, UMF held the Bobcats scoreless through the ninth inning. Starting pitcher Brandon Gallagher (North Yarmouth, ME) limited Bates to one run over six innings, on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts, and relievers Will Griffiths (Mechanic Falls, ME) and Dale Winchenbach (Waldoboro, ME) also blanked Bates in their combined three innings of work.
The Beavers tied the game at 1-1 in the eightth inning as Russ Schmelzer (Winthrop, ME) was hit by a pitch to lead off and quickly stole second base. He made it to third on an infield single by Phineas Peake (Penobscot, ME), then came home with the tying run on a wild pitch. Bates pitcher Demetrios Gatzogiannis (Wells, ME) induced Matt Levine (Pelham, NH) to fly out. Josh Garneau (South Portland, ME) was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out, and the Bobcats ended the inning with a strikeout-throwout double play.
Bates' Ryan Heide (Medfield, MA) came on as Bates' ninth pitcher of the game in the top of the ninth -- the Bobcats made the game a bullpen day, putting a new pitcher in to start each inning. Heide held Farmington scoreless in both the ninth and the 10th, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out four. His record this season was bumped to 4-0 when the Bobcats struck for three runs in the bottom of the 10th.
Tom Beaton (West Newbury, MA) led off by legging out an infield single to short. Beaton reached second on a wild pitch, and Webb drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Junior Chris Burke (Andover, MA) flew out to left, but Beaton tagged up and advanced safely to third as the winning run with one out. Farmington replaced reliever Ethan Jean (Jackson, ME) with DiPompo, but Simon greeted him abruptly on his first pitch with the home run.
Simon also scored Bates' lone run in the second inning. He led off the inning with a triple to left-center, and Lynd followed by lacing an RBI single to right center. Gallagher escaped the inning with no further damage.
Heide was the lone Bates pitcher to face more than four batters in the game. The Bobcats' pitching committee combined for nine strikeouts and scattered six hits and three walks in the game.
