Baseball home opener spoiled by Castleton

FARMINGTON -- Castleton State College topped the University of Maine at Farmington 8-4, 13-3 in North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division competition today in the Beavers' home opener at Hippach Field.

Farmington (0-12, 0-6) and Castleton (15-8, 6-0) are scheduled to play another doubleheader on Sunday at Hippach Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.

In the opener, the Spartans slugged four home runs en route to the 8-4 victory. Garrett Bissonnette (Lyman, ME) and Ted Mills (Stockbridge, VT) went back-to-back in the second inning with Jack Lancelin (Chatham, NY) clubbing a solo home run in the third and Ryan Zielinski (Schenectady, NY adding a two-run dinger in the fifth.

Castleton led 7-0 before the Beavers posted fourruns in the fifth. Josh Garneau (South Portland, ME) plated a pair of runs with a single and scored on a wild pitch.

Bissonette and Lancelin each had a single to go along with their respective roundtrippers, while Billy Manley (Lowell, MA) smacked a ground-run double.

Brandon Fay (South Burlington, VT) went the distance for Castleton. Fay walked two and struck out two, while scattering eight hits.

Bill Ridge (South Portland, ME) took the loss with seven hits allowed, a walk and a strikeout in five innings.

In game two, Bissonette, Lancelin and Matt Eisenhuth (Townshend, VT) each collected three hits to power a 15-hit Castleton attack in the 10-run win.

Eisenhuth singled, doubled twice and drove in four runs with Bissonnette singling three singles with three RBI and Lancelin singling twice, tripling and scoring four times. The Spartans pushed across seven runs in the second.

Garneau and Connor McNeill (Portland, ME) each rapped a pair of singles for Farmington with Phineas Peake (Penobscot, ME) chipping in with a double.

Matt Greene (Albany, NY) earned the win with nine hits scattered over four innings, three walks and two strikeouts.

Brian Morrison (Saco, ME) went two innings in the loss with two walks and two strikeouts.
