Baseball set down by Castleton

FARMINGTON -- Castleton State College completed a series sweep of the University of Maine at Farmington baseball team as the Spartans defeated the Beavers 9-6, 10-0 in North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division action today at Hippach Field.

Farmington (0-14 overall, 0-8 in NEAC East) is scheduled to visit Thomas College for a twinbill Wednesday at 1 p.m. Castleton (17-8, 8-0) is tabbed to take on Amherst College Tuesday for a single game in Massachusetts at 4 p.m.

In the game one, Garrett Bissonnette (Lyman, ME) went 3 for 3, including a solo home run, and Mathew Pause (Wilder, VT) singled twice and plated three runs as Castleton took the 9-6 win.

Matt Levine (Pelham, NH) clubbed a grand-slam home run in the seventh to tighten the game for Farmington. Levine also had an RBI groundout in the third.

Ryan Zielinski (Schenectady, NY) also smacked a two-run double for the Spartans, who collected 11 hits.

Ken Cook (Springfield, VT) earned the win. Cook allowed four hits over six innings with two walks and three strikeouts.

Connor McNeill (Portland, ME) took the loss with 4.1 innings, 11 hits allowed with a walk and a strikeout. Will Griffiths (Mechanic Falls, ME) and Casey Ashey (Searsport, ME) combined for 2.2 innings of no-hit relief for the Beavers.

In game two, Billy Sisko (Weathersfield, VT) tossed a three-hit shutout and Bissonnette again led the offense with an RBI groundout and a two-run dinger.

Sisko issued three walks and struck out five, while limiting the Beavers to a Kyle Shea (Bar Harbor, ME) double and singles by Zach Keene (Livermore, ME) and Brian Morrison (Saco, ME)

David Brandt (Contoocook, VT) singlked twice and drove in a run for the Spartans, while Zielinski, Matt Eisenhuth (Townshend, VT) and Ted Mills (Stockbridge, VT) each doubled.

Brandon Gallagher (Cumberland, ME) went four innings in a losing effort. Gallagher walked one and gave up seven hits.
