FARMINGTON -- The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team broke a 4-4 tie with a four-run seventh inning and held on to down the University of Maine at Presque Isle 9-8 in non-conference action today at Hippach Field.
The Beavers (2-15) are scheduled to host Lyndon State College in a key North Eastern Athletic Conference four-game this weekend. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon. The Owls (2-21) are traveling to Vermont to face Southern Vermont College Friday at 3 p.m.
With the game tied at 4-4 after six-and-a-half frames, the first five Farmington batters reached in the seventh with Kyle Shea (Bar Harbor, ME) getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Brian Morrison (Saco, ME) delivering an RBI single for a 6-4 lead. After a run scored on a fielder's choice, Jack Macvane (Mechanic Falls, ME) put the Beavers ahead 8-4 with an RBI single.
Matt Levine (Pelham, NH) -- who led the Beavers with two singles and a double -- collected his third base hit in the eighth and made his way around the bases on a stolen base, a wild pitch and a passed ball with an important insurance run as the Owls plated four runs in the ninth. UMPI's ninth featured an RBI double by Corey Harding (Plymouth, ME) and a run-scoring hit by Stephen Thorne (Dalhousie, New Brunswick) before Farmington reliever Ryan DiPompo (Jay, ME) was able to fight through the rough inning to close out the 9-8 win.
Josh Garneau (South Portland, ME) and Brett Wallingford (Sanford, ME) each singled and doubled for Farmington and Macvane added two singles and two RBI as the Beavers registered 13 hits.
Harding led UMPI with a single, a double and two RBI, while Tyler Delaney (Truro, Nova Scotia) supplied two singles and two RBI and Jake Fillebrown (Stoneham, ME) also had two hits.
Dale Winchenbach (Waldoboro, ME) worked seven innings in the win for Farmington. The freshman walked four and struck four with five hits allowed.
Ryan Hill (Houlton, ME) took the loss for UMPI with four hits allowed over an inning-plus of relief.
