Baseball rallies for split with Lyndon State

FARMINGTON -- Matt Judkins (Thomaston, ME)'s two-run single capped a four-run seventh-inning rally the University of Maine at Farmington baseball team grabbed a 9-8 win in the second game of North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division twinbill with Lyndon State College at Hippach Field today.

The Hornets used a four-run sixth inning to take a 6-4 victory in the opener.

Farmington (3-16 overall, 2-10 in the NEAC East) is scheduled to visit Thomas College Wednesday to complete their NEAC East season series with a doubleheader. First pitch is at 1 p.m. The Hornets (8-19, 2-8) are scheduled to host Plattsburgh State University of a single game Wednesday at 4 p.m.

In the nightcap, the Beavers trailed 8-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh with Josh Garneau (South Portland, ME) drawing a bases-loaded walk and another run scoring on an error before Judkins' base hit up the middle to lift Farmington to the 9-8 win.

The Hornets had just tallied three runs in the top of the seventh to snatch the three-run lead. Farmington leftfielder Russ Schmelzer (Winthrop, ME) made a diving stab of a Ben Clark (Brattleboro, VT) fly ball, but Stetson Hicks (Whitefield, NH) scored from second on the play to put the Hornets ahead 6-5. Jake Ainsworth (Fairfax, VT) followed with a two-run blast to put Lyndon State into an 8-5 advantage.

Judkins led the Beavers with a single, a double and three RBI, while Matt Levine (Pelham, NH) singled twice.

Korey Marsh (Essex, VT) singled twice and homered for Lyndon State, which also received a two-run homer from Clark.

Casey Ashey (Searsport, ME) collected the win with an inning of relief.

Shane Fleury (Plainfield, VT) did not record an out and walked a batter in the loss.

In the first game, Ainsworth, Hicks and Corey Lescault (Bristol, RI) each smacked an RBI hit in a four-run sixth for the Hornets in the 6-4 win.

Shayne Kirby (Fairfax, VT) singled and doubled for Lyndon State, while Clark contributed two singles.

Jack MacVane (Mechanic Falls, ME) singled twice and drove in two runs for the Beavers with Kyle Shea (Bar Harbor, ME) singling and doubling and Brett Wallingford (Sanford, ME) blasting a solo home run.

Shane O'Donnell-Leach (Groton, VT) went the distance in the victory. The sophomore scattered 10 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

None of the six runs allowed by Farmington's Bill Ridge (South Portland, ME) were earned. Ridge went 5.2 innings with a walk and three strikeouts along with eight hits.
