FARMINGTON -- After letting a four-run lead slip away in the opener for a 10-7 loss in extra innings, the University of Maine at Farmington baseball team notched a 5-2 win over Fisher College non-conference action today at Hippach Field.
The Beavers (5-20) are scheduled to take on Bates College Tuesday in Farmington's final regular-season games. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. The Falcons (18-18) are headed to Vermont Tech for a four-game series this weekend.
In the nightcap, Casey Ashey (Searsport, ME) tossed a complete game and Kyle Shea (Bar Harbor, ME) clubbed a two-run home run as the Beavers picked up a 5-2 win.
Ashey allowed four hits, struck out four and walked three for Farmington. Ashey held Fisher to a Reynaldo Nunez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) two-run homer in the fourth. Nunez also doubled
Brett Wallingford (Sanford, ME) doubled twice and plated a run for Farmington with Brian Morrison (Saco, ME) successfully squeezing in a run with a bunt single and Steve Hutchinson (Beverly, MA) doubling.
Nunez also doubled in the loss.
After winning the first game in relief, Fisher's Zack Thompson (Salem, MA) took the loss in game two. The southpaw struck out five and walked two in four innings.
In game two, the Falcons pushed across three unearned runs in the seventh to send the game into extra innings and scored three times in the ninth to post a 10-7 win.
Shea and Matt Levine (Pelham, NH) each smacked two-run singles in the fourth to give Farmington a 7-3 advantage, but a two-out error in the seventh allowed the Falcons to score three times. Nunez thumped a two-run double to tie the game at 7-7.
The Falcons crossed the plate three times in the ninth on an RBI single by Steven Clark (Haverhill, MA) a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk for the 10-7 final.
Levine singled twice, doubled and plated three runs in the loss with Russ Schmelzer (Winthrop, ME) also singling twice and doubling and Shea adding three singles. Matt Judkins (Thomaston, ME) drove in two runs for the Beavers and Wallingford singled twice.
Nunez singled, doubled twice and plated three runs for the Falcons with Edwin Pena (Union City, NJ) collecting a single and a double.
Thompson tossed two innings of relief for the win with a walk and three strikeouts.
Ryan DiPompo (Jay, ME) was the losing pitcher, retiring two batters, but walking four and giving up two hits.
