Field hockey kicks off conference play with win

WATERVILLE – The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team opened North Atlantic Conference play by holding off Thomas College 2-1 today.

The Beavers (4-1) are scheduled to return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. when they play host to Endicott College.

The Beavers started out today's match with an early goal 13 minutes into the game. The goal came from Hattie Laliberte (Guilford, Maine) and the assist was from Emma Deans (Gorham, Maine) for a 1-0 lead at the half.

Farmington continued to outplay the Terriers into the second half, which led to a goal by Deans four minutes into the period for a 2-0 lead for the visitors. Thomas got one goal back off a corner opportunity when Ali Kriegel (Winslow, Maine) set up Ally Kennedy (Readfield, Maine) to cut the lead to one goal for Farmington.

Sarah Brown (Windham, Maine) stopped two shots for the Beavers, who fired 18 shots to Thomas' six.
