Defending champ Bowdoin dismisses Beavers

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Defending NCAA Division III national champion Bowdoin College posted a 6-0 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington in non-conference action this evening at Howard F. Ryan Field.

The Beavers (6-5) are scheduled to host Castleton State College in North Atlantic Conference action Saturday at 1 p.m. The Polar Bears, currently ranked second in the nation, ran their record to 9-0.

Cathleen Smith led Bowdoin with two goals and two assists, while Katie Herter added a pair of scores and Elizabeth Clegg and Pam Herter each tallied a goal. The Polar Bears outshot the Beavers 34-1 in the game.

UMF goalkeeper Curran Brierley (East Hampton, N.Y.) and the Beaver defense weathered 18 shots and nine penalty corners before Bowdoin broke through on the scoreboard with Clegg's marker at 28:28.

Brierley finished with nine first-half saves in the loss. Felisha Taylor (Chelsea, Maine) stopped three shots in the second half.

Kayla Lessard manned the pipes for the first 52:52 for the victory. Hannah Gartner relieved Lessard and turned back the Beavers' lone shot, a Kaitlyn Bullen (Farmington, Maine) bid, to preserve the shutout.
