Baseball opens trip by falling to Roanoke

SALEM, Va. --The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team lost to Roanoke College 13-3 in its season opener tonight in non-conference action at Kiwanis Field.

The Beavers (0-1) are scheduled to visit Guilford College Friday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader.

Josh Garneau (South Portland, Maine) doubled twice for Farmington, while Zach Keene (Livermore, Maine) singled, doubled and drove in a run and Brian Jenkins (Gorham, Maine) had an RBI groundout.

Brandon Gallagher (North Yarmouth, Maine) took the loss for Farmington. The senior went 3.2 innings with six hits allowed, two walks and two strikeouts.

The Maroons (8-11) banged out 15 hits in victory and broke the game open with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Mark Manthe earned the mound win and singled three times with three RBI for Roanoke with Benjamin Amos doubling twice and plating three runs and Robbie Scott singled, doubled and drove in two runs. The Maroons featured six repeat hitters.

Manthe worked six innings, scattering five hits with a walk and eight strikeouts.
