Baseball conquered by Quakers

GREENSBORO, N.C. --The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team fell to Guilford College 26-5, 10-6 in a non-conference twinbill.

The Beavers (0-3) are scheduled to visit Greensboro College Saturday at 11 a.m. for a doubleheader.

In the first game, Guilford pushed across 15 runs in the second inning to roll to the 26-5 victory. The game was called after five innings.

Ed Flaherty (Baileyville, Maine) smacked a two-run single for the Beavers with Russ Schmelzer (Winthrop, Maine) tripling and Zach Keene (Livermore, Maine) scoring a run with a base hit.

Will Griffiths (Mechanic Falls, Maine) was the losing pitcher for Farmington with eight hits allowed, five walks and three hit batters over 1.2 innings.

Forrest Steed singled twice and clubbed a grand-slam home run to finish with seven RBI for the Quakers, while Jay Cox collected two singles and four RBI and DJ Phillips singled twice, doubled twice and knocked in three runs.

Alex Pecevich earned the win with three hits allowed, four walks and four strikeouts in four innings.

In the second game, the Quakers held off Farmington for the 10-6 win.

The Beavers got within a run on an RBI single by Brian Jenkins (Gorham, Maine) in the sixth inning at 7-6, but Guilford scored three times in the bottom of the frame to take the win.

Jenkins finished with three singles as did Jack Macvane (Mechanic Falls, Maine). Josh Garneau (South Portland, Maine) singled twice and drove in two runs in the loss.

Joe Messerman (Brunswick, Maine) was hit with the loss as the freshman gave up nine hits with two walks and a hit batter over 5.1 innings.

Guilford's Derek Hardison doubled, tripled and plated two runs, while Bryan Bialecky doubled twice and knocked in two runs.

Micah Denny earned the win in 3.1 innings of relief. Denny allowed five hits and struck out four.
