Box Score 2 WATERVILLE -- Thomas College edged the University of Maine at Farmington 5-4 and 4-3 in a North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division baseball doubleheader today.
The Beavers, who have lost by one run six times this season, dropped to 1-14 (1-5) and slated to host the University of Maine at Presque Isle for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. The games will be played at Thomas due to unplayable field conditions. The Terriers improved to 9-16 (5-2).
In game one, the Beavers' seventh-inning rally fell short as the Terriers held on for the 5-4 victory.
The Beavers trailed 5-2 heading into the seventh when Alex Goldrup (Damariscotta, Maine) led off with a triple and was brought home by a Ben Pearson (North Stonington, Conn.) double to make it 5-3. Pearson scored on a sac fly by Russ Schmelzer (Winthrop, Maine) to slim the lead to 5-4, but the Terriers got the final out when Ian McAlister (South Berwick, Maine) got thrown out trying to stretch a single into to a double to hold on to win 5-4.
UMF scored first in the second inning when Jack MacVane (Mechanic Falls, Maine) hit a sac fly to centerfield, after Matt Levine (Pelham, N.H.) doubled to right field, and advance to third on a passed ball. Zach Keene (Livermore, Maine) singled to right field, and then stole second base and then scored on an error by Terriers shortstop Jeff Richardson for a 2-0 lead. The Terriers tied it in the bottom of the second when Rob Nutter hit a homerun and Josh Gray scored on Jake Chamblee single to centerfield.
The Terriers took the lead for good in the bottom of the third when Daniel Ierardi single and then stole second and third base and later scored on a sac fly by Ben Goodall. Thomas scored two more in the bottom of the fourth when Taylor Livingston hit a RBI single and Chamblee stole home.
The Beavers' Brandon Gallagher (North Yarmouth, Maine) pitched a complete game allowing eight hits, four earned runs while striking out three. McAlister went 2-4 from the plate for the Beavers.
For Thomas Chris Farrar pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and four runs. The Terriers got hits from eight of their nine batters.
In the second game, Cody Vigue clubbed a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to lift Thomas to the twinbill sweep with a 4-3 win.
The Beavers staked a 3-2 lead in the third on a Levine two-run triple and an RBI single by MacVane, but John Charves and Ierardi both single with two outs and then Cody Vigue hit a double to score both runners giving Thomas the 4-3 win.
Thomas's Danny Burke pitched 6.1 innings allowing ten hits, three runs, while striking out four. Tom Babb came in to get the final two batters in the seventh to pick up the win.
UMF's Casey Ashey (Searsport, Maine) pitched the complete game allowing eight hits, four runs, while striking out four in the loss.
McAlister singled twice and doubled to lead UMF, while Levine paired his triple with a single and Josh Garneau (South Portland, Maine) also enjoyed a two-hit day.
