Box Score 2 CASTINE -- Maine Maritime Academy topped the University of Maine at Farmington 5-3, 3-0 in North Atlantic Conference softball this evening.
The Beavers (9-15, 5-7) are scheduled to host Husson University Saturday at 10 a.m. in a NAC twinbill to close out the regular season. The games were moved up in an attempt to stay ahead of tomorrow's wet weather. UMF has dropped its last six games. The Mariners improved to 17-6 (11-3).
In the opener, the Mariners built a 5-0 lead over the first five innings and held on to defeat the Beavers 5-3.
After a pair of MMA miscues, Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine) and Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) delivered run-scoring hits to help UMF cut the lead down to 5-3 in the sixth. Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine) had the other hit in the game for the Beavers.
Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine) went the distance in the loss, giving up six hits with a walk and nine strikeouts.
Mallery Stanley led the Mariners with two doubles and an RBI, while Sabrina Keach and Casey McCluskey each knocked in a run with a single.
Erica Taylor got the win for MMA, tossing a three-hitter with a walk and nine strikeouts.
In the second game, McCluskey hurled a three-hitter as the Mariners blanked the Beavers 3-0.
McCluskey struck out six and issued one free pass in the victory.
Sam Morency (Lewiston, Maine) doubled for UMF, while Bartlett and Meaghan Donnell (Rochester, N.H.) each singled.
Vaillancourt also pitched game two for the Beavers with six hits allowed, two walks and five punchouts.
Brittany Hunt plated a pair of runs for MMA in the second to help the hosts stake their 3-0 lead. Hunt and Megan Russell each had a pair of hits.
