Levine RBI single gives baseball split with Husson

BANGOR -- Matt Levine (Pelham, N.H.) singled home Jack MacVane (Mechanic Falls, Maine) to give the University of Maine at Farmington a 3-2 eight-inning win over Husson University in game two of today's North Eastern Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at the Winkin Complex.

The games were originally scheduled to be play at UMF's Hippach Field, but moved to Bangor due to anticipated inclement weather.

For the Beavers (5-20, 4-10), who dropped the opener 3-0, the win was the first over the Eagles (24-15, 12-4) in their last 12 tries. UMF is scheduled to host Thomas College Monday at 2 p.m. for a NEAC doubleheader, while Husson awaits the NAC postseason seedings.

In game one, Dan Beatham pitched the complete game win with seven strikeouts and five hits in seven innings of work in a 3-0 shutout win for the Eagles.

The Eagles reached the scoreboard in the top of the first inning off a squeeze bunt by Kevin Rennick that plated Kyle Vanidestine.  Husson tacked on an additional run in the top of the fourth inning following a leadoff triple by Sean Smith and an RBI single by Chris Maguire.  The sixth inning featured the game's final run.  Ben McLain stole third and reached home on another squeeze bunt by Rennick.

Brandon Gallagher (North Yarmouth, Maine) shouldered the loss for UMF with seven innings pitched, two strikeouts, and six hits allowed.

MacVane, Josh Garneau (South Portland, Maine), Brian Jenkins (Gorham, Maine), Russ Schmelzer (Winthrop, Maine) and Dale Winchenbach (Waldoboro, Maine) each had a single for the Beavers.

In game two, Levine's RBI single capped a rain-soaked affair, while Casey Ashey (Searsport, Maine) tallied the win with an eight inning performance that featured four strikeouts, five hits, and two runs in the Beavers' 3-2 win.

Husson's Ryan Arsenault received the loss for his 1.1 innings of work.

Husson scored two runs in an error-riddled fourth inning.  Farmington responded in the bottom of the fourth inning when Matt Levine scored on a error.  The Beavers tacked on an additional run to knot the game at 3-3 off an RBI single by MacVane that plated Connor McNeill (Portland, Maine)

Levine had a pair of hits for UMF, while McNeill smacked a double.
