Harkins, Huskies nip Beavers

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine  – Natalie Harkins (Windham, Maine) rocketed in a breakaway goal in the 29th minute to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 1-0 win over the University of Maine at Farmington in a non-conference field hockey game this afternoon at Hannaford Field.

The Beavers (1-1) are scheduled to visit Rivier College Saturday at 1 p.m. Playing on their newly opened turf field for the first time, the Huskies earned their third straight win to improve to 3-3 overall.

With the game locked in a scoreless draw, Harkins corralled a forward played ball and used her speed burst through the Beavers' defense line. Making a touch on the ball to the inside of the circle, after beating her defenders, Harkins unleashed a powerful shot on goal to beat Beaver freshman keeper Curran Brierley (East Hampton, N.Y.) for her second goal of the season.

Brierley made six saves.

Both teams played a fairly even game with the Huskies holding a slight 10-9 edge on shots.  However, the Beavers had the advantage in penalty corners 10-6.  Southern Maine sophomore keeper Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) made six saves to earn her third straight shutout victory.
