Box Score LEWISTON, Maine -- Lyndsey Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) scored all three goals as Bates College blanked the University of Maine at Farmington 3-0 in non-conference field hockey action today.
The Beavers dropped to 2-2 and are scheduled to host Simmons College in their home opener Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Bates rises to 2-3 overall.
Beaton , Bates' leading scorer last season and an All-Region selection, scored 14:07 into the game as junior Nicole Santosuosso (Canton, Mass.) fed an entry pass from the top left of the UMF circle. Beaton tipped the ball away from her defender to set up a 1-on-1 shot that passed Beavers goalkeeper Curran Brierley (East Hampton, N.Y.) to her right and hit the board for a 1-0 lead. The score stayed at 1-0 by intermission, despite a 17-3 Bates advantage in shots taken.
Less than five minutes into the second period, Beaton scored again by redirecting Sarah Merullo's (Essex, Mass.) long entry pass from 15 yards beyond the circle past Brierley.
Beaton and the Bobcats dominated the second half to a greater degree than the first, outshooting the Beavers 14-1 in the second frame. Bates made it 3-0 with 7:06 remaining in the game on a penalty corner play, with sophomore Polly Merck's (Beverly, Mass.) well-place insertion pass stopped by Beaton and slapped into the goal for her first career hat trick.
Brierley finished with six saves, while Bates goalie Becca Otley (Cumberland, Maine) made two saves for her second career shutout.
Beaton racked up 11 shots for Bates.
