Box Score ANDOVER, N.H. – The University of Maine at Farmington's 2012 women's soccer season came to an end Wednesday with a 4-1 loss to Colby-Sawyer College in a North Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament semifinal match at Proctor Academy
Colby-Sawyer (14-2-4), the tournament's top seed, will host second seed Castleton in the championship match on Saturday. Colby-Sawyer makes its first trip to a title game since 1997. Castleton defeated third seed Husson 2-0 earlier today. UMaine-Farmington closes out the season with a 11-7-1 record.
The first ten minutes went scoreless as both teams jockeyed to gain field position. In the 11th minute, the Chargers began to pepper the net and finally broke through. Junior Adrienne Bender sent a shot towards goal, but it was saved by UMF keeper Beth Lebel (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston). After a couple of players tried to find possession, Colby-Sawyer's Lauren Bernard gained control and scored past the dive of the goalie.
The Beavers quickly responded two minutes later with an equalizer. UMF was given a corner kick that was taken by sophomore Ava Amador (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue). She bent the ball towards the net and found the head of senior Alida Peake (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy) who flicked it into an open part of the net. The goal was Peake's 11th of the season.
Five minutes later, the Beavers had a chance to take a lead when Peake found herself on a breakaway. Colby-Sawyer keeper Shay Spencer came out to challenge the play and made a diving save as Peake tried to beat her to the cross corner.
Colby-Sawyer took a 2-1 lead in the 34th minute on a goal by freshman Tallon Tomasi. Bender sent a ball in from the left side to a waiting Tomasi in the middle of the box. Tomasi struck the ball before it hit the turf and curved it into the right side of the net. The goal was Tomasi's fifth on the season and third game-winner.
Four minutes later, the Chargers created separation with their third goal of the game. Bender, who was marked by a defender, made a quick step to the left around the pressure and scored to the lower right corner of the net.
Bender wasn't done, as she added an insurance goal in the 77th minute off a cross from senior Sarah Lavalle. The goal was Bender's team best 12th of the season.
UMaine-Farmington outshot Colby-Sawyer, 13-12, and had eight corner kicks to the Chargers' three. Spencer finished with eight saves for her 14th win of the season. Lebel made four stops for the Beavers.
