UMF notches first win, splits twinbill with Lynx

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team scored six times in the sixth inning to grab a 9-6 win over Lindenwood University-Belleville in the second game of a doubleheader at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Chain of Lakes Field.

In the opener, the Lynx took advantage of six UMF miscues to post a 9-0 victory over the Beavers.

UMF (1-3) is scheduled to play Florida Christian College today at 3 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla. Lindenwood-Belleville stands at 11-12.

In game two, Jack MacVane (Mechanic Falls, Maine) and Matthew Woodbury (Fairfield, Maine) each delivered a two-run single in the aforementioned sixth to help the Beavers to the 9-6 victory.

Woodbury went 3 for 3 with two singles, a double and three RBI to lead UMF with MacVane singling three times. Ed Flaherty (Baileyville, Maine) smacked a single and a double for the Beavers, while Colin Mello (Windham, Maine) singled twice.

Dale Winchenbach (Waldoboro, Maine) hurled a complete game for the win. Winchenbach spread around eight hits, while walking two and striking out one. Only one of the Lynx' six runs were earned.

Zack Fortner singled and triple for Lindenwood-Belleville, while Kaleb Warren singled and doubled and Brendan Hand provided two singles.

Jamie Pickel took the loss for the Lynx.

In the first game, an error-riddled sixth inning allowed Lindenwood-Belleville to blow open the contest and take a 9-0 win.

Leading 3-0 after five innings, the Lynx pushed across six runs in the sixth on four UMF errors. Lindenwood-Belleville, also the beneficiaries of two walks and two hit batters, did not have a hit in the frame.

Ian McAlister (South Berwick, Maine) clubbed a single and a double for the Beavers, while Winchenbach and Brandon Gallagher (North Yarmouth, Maine) each singled twice.

Ben Pearson (Stonington, Conn.) took the loss with two hits allowed, six walks and a strikeout in 5.1 innings of work. McAlister and Ethan Jean (Jackson, Maine) did not allow a hit in relief.

Andrew Williams earned the win over the Lynx.
