HENNIKER, N.H. -- New England College took a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division games from the University of Maine at Farmington as the Pilgrims defeated the Beavers 5-3, 9-8 this afternoon at Laurie Cox Memorial Field.

In the first game, the Pilgrims scraped together two runs on an error and a sacrifice fly to emerge from the opener with a 5-3 victory.

UMF's Ed Flaherty (Baileyville, Maine) smacked his first collegiate home run to tie the game at 3-3 in the fourth. Brett Wallingford (Sanford, Maine) rapped a pair of singles in the loss, while Zach Keene (Livermore, Maine) and Matthew Woodbury (Fairfield, Maine) each had an RBI single.

With UMF leading 4-3 entering the seventh, Ben Yarian (South Berwick, Maine) connected for an RBI double and Dale Winchenbach (Waldoboro, Maine) followed with a two-run two-base hit to give the Beavers a 7-3 lead. NEC pushed across four runs in the home half -- an RBI single each by Burgess, Juan Berrios and Scott Fortune -- to knot the contest at 7-7.

A sacrifice fly by Jack MacVane (Mechanic Falls, Maine) gave UMF an 8-7 edge in the eighth, but Byrd tripled, scored on an error, and Berrios singled home Chris Biskup to give the Pilgrims the 9-8 win.

Winchenbach finished with a single, double and four RBI with Colin Mello (Windham, Maine) providing two singles and a triple and Yarian chipping in two singles and a double. Keene had a single and a double and Wallingford singled twice in the loss.
