Pilgrims prevail over UMF in NAC twinbill

FARMINGTON, Maine -- New England College defeated the University of Maine at Farmington 14-8, 3-1 in North Atlantic Conference softball action this afternoon at Prescott Field.

The Beavers (4-8 overall, 2-4 NAC) are scheduled to host Johnson State College Saturday at noon. The Pilgrims (14-8, 6-0) are traveling to Thomas College for a 1 p.m. twinbill.

In game one, LiAnn Linck (New Fairfield, Conn.) rapped a single, a double, a home run and five RBI and Jessica Kiehl (North Haven, Conn.) went 4 for 4 with three RBI as NEC outslugged the Beavers for the 14-8 win.

Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine) smacked a pair of solo home runs for the Beavers, who led 1-0, 5-4 and 7-5 after the first three innings, but NEC scored two or more runs in each of the last four frames for the win. Amy Jones (Augusta, Maine) singled, homered and plate three runs for UMF, while Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) added a two-run blast, Jillian Withee (Salem TWP, Maine) singled twice and Meaghan Donnell (Rochester, N.H.) laced a double.

The performance of Linck and Kiehl headlined an 18-hit attack for the Pilgrims, in which every starter had at least one hit. Teraysa White (Belgrade, Maine) singled twice and doubled with three RBI in the win, while Stephanie Freitag (Lakeville, Mass.) and Olivia Stanley (Walpole, N.H.) each collected two hits.

Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine) took the loss with four walks and a like number of strikeouts over six innings.

Gabrielle Timms (Clark Summit, Pa.) notched the win in relief. Timms threw four innings with three hits allowed.

In the second game, Timms grabbed her second win of the day with a six-hitter as NEC downed the Beavers 3-1 to finish the sweep.

Timms walked one and struck out six in the complete game.

Linck recorded a pair of hits, including a solo home run, while White singled and doubled. The Pilgrims pushed across a pair of runs on Linck's dinger and Elizabeth Harrigan (Weston, Conn.) scoring on a wild pitch in the third. Taylor Belsito (Millbury, Mass.) had an RBI single in the sixth.

Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine) and Liz Sargent (Trenton, Maine) each doubled for UMF. The Beavers got their run on a Withee RBI single.

Bartlett issued three free passes and struck out four in the complete-game loss.
