Jones, UMF jolt Johnson State

FARMINGTON, Maine -- Amy Jones (Augusta, Maine) smacked a home run in each game and the University of Maine at Farmington pitching allowed two hits as the Beavers routed Johnson State College 10-0, 9-0 in North Atlantic Conference softball action today at Prescott Field.

UMF (6-8 overall, 4-4 NAC) snapped a four-game stumble and are scheduled to host the University of Maine at Presque Isle Monday at 3:30 p.m. for a doubleheader. The Badgers (7-14-1, 1-2-1) are slated to visit Lyndon State College Tuesday at 3 p.m.

In the opener, Jones' three-run home run was part of an nine-run third-inning output that led the Beavers to a 10-0 win, shortened by the mercy rule. Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine) clubbed a two-run triple in the Beavers' third. UMF sent 13 batters to the plate in the frame.

Jones finished with a pair of hits as did Devin Ftzgerald (Casco, Maine) with a single and a double and Casey Mull (Portland, Maine) with a pair of singles. Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Jillian Withee (Salem TWP, Maine) each had an RBI double in the win.

Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine) tossed a one-hitter with a hit batter, two free passes and six strikeouts.

Amber McCullock (Morrisville, Vt.) singled for the lone Johnson hit.

Meagan Russ (Burlington, Vt.) took the loss with 11 hits allowed and three strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Four of the 10 runs were unearned.

In game two, UMF scored three times in each of the first three innings for another abbreviated victory.

Mitchell doubled, homered and drove in three runs for UMF, which received a two-run shot from Jones and a pair of singles and two stolen bases from Michelle Cote (Arundel, Maine).

Bartlett, who also drove in a pair of runs, earned the win with a walk and seven punchouts in four innings. Anna Piggott (Manchester, Conn.) walked one and struck out one in an inning of relief.

McCullock also collected the Badgers' hit in the second game.

Russ was hit with the defeat with nine hits allowed, four walks and three strikeouts over three innings.
