Beavers take twinbill from Owls

FARMINGTON, Maine -- The University of Maine at Farmington softball team evened its record at 8-8 as the Beavers swept a doubleheader from the University of Maine at Presque Isle 5-3, 7-2 in non-conference action today at Prescott Field.

The Beavers are scheduled to host Colby College Tuesday at 4 p.m. for a non-conference doubleheader. The Owls are scheduled to visit the University of Southern Maine Sunday at noon for a twinbill.
In the opener, Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine) went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBI as UMF held on to defeat the Owls 5-3.
Bartlett, Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Jillian Withee (Salem TWP, Maine) each had an RBI single as the Beavers built a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Bartlett also delivered a run-scoring hit in the third and scored on a wild pitch as UMF led 5-0 after six innings. UMPI made things interesting in the seventh as the first four Owl batters reached with Carolynn Tuck (Brewer, Maine)  supplying a two-run single and scoring on a wild pitch, but the Beavers were able to escape with the 5-3 win.
Mitchell singled and tripled in the win, while Withee finished with two singles.
Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine) tossed a complete game in the win with nine strikeout. Vaillancourt only gave up five hits, but battled through six walks.
Kathleen Higgins (Cole Harbor, Nova Scotia) was UMPI's lone repeat hitter with a pair of singles.
Krista Coffin (Presque Isle, Maine) took the loss with eight hits allowed, two walks and five strikeouts.
In the second game, Devin Fitzgerald (Casco, Maine) and Amy Jones (Augusta, Maine) each singled, doubled and drove in two runs as UMF upended UMPI 7-2 for the sweep.
Mitchell celebrated her birthday with a solo home run to open a four-run sixth for the Beavers. Tatiana Vogel (Belgrade, Maine) double and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the victory, while Meghan Plant (Burlington, Vt.) also doubled.
Bartlett threw a three-hitter for UMF with five walks and five strikeouts.
Desiree Smith (Thomaston, Maine) smacked an RBI double for the Owls.
Courtney Bishop (Saco, Maine) took the loss with nine hits allowed and two strikeouts.
