Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College's Megan Fortier scored 9:32 into the second half to break a 1-1 tie and lead Colby to a 2-1 non-conference field hockey win over University of Maine at Farmington, Sunday afternoon at Bill Alfond Field.
The Mules (1-2) had a 28-2 shot advantage over UMaine-Farmington (1-3), but a solid effort from UMF goalie
Curran Brierley (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) kept the Beavers in the contest. Brierley logged a season-high 11 saves, as Colby outshot UMF 28-2 over 70 minutes of play and had an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners.
All three goals came off penalty corners, with Colby's Caitlin Murray getting the first one off assists from Kellie Walsh and Lucy Gerrity. Gerrity struck the corner, Walsh did the stop, and Murray ripped a hard shot to the right corner just 5:49 into play.
Chelsea Morley (York, Maine/York) answered back for UMF about seven minutes later on a corner. Morley ripped a shot from the right side off assists from
Emma Daniel (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) and
Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine/Hermon).
Natalie Fischer picked up the assist on Colby's game-winning goal. Her blast was deflected by Fortier, who scored her second goal of the young season.
Colby goalies Michelle Burt and Sarah Evans shared the duties in the Mules' cage, and combined did not record a single save.
UMF returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 22, when the Beavers travel to Boston to face Simmons College in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
