Barry and Weymouth lead UMF past Simmons

BOSTON  -- University of Maine at Farmington senior Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine/Hermon) and junior Kashley Weymouth (Pittston, Maine/Gardiner) each logged a pair of goals to lead the Beavers to a 6-4 win over Simmons College, in a North Atlantic Conference field hockey contest Saturday afternoon.

UMaine-Farmington improved to 2-3 overall, and remains undefeated in the NAC with a 2-0 mark. Simmons fell to 1-8, 0-2 NAC, with the loss.

Weymouth scored the Beavers' go-ahead goal with 23:46 remaining in the opening half, breaking a 1-1 tie to give UMF the lead. Barry extended the Beavers' lead to 3-1 with her first goal of the day with 12:36 left in the opening frame.

Weymouth gave UMF a 4-1 advantage with an unassisted goal with 7:20 left in the frame, but Simmons trimmed the lead to 4-2 on a goal by Kelly Williamson with 28 seconds left on the clock.

Simmons' Meghan Fay reeled UMaine-Farmington back to within one with an unassisted goal just 42 seconds into the second half. The score remained 4-3 for nearly 20 minutes, before Barry finally responded for the Beavers with her second solo goal of the night with 19:29 showing on the clock.

The two teams traded goals down the stretch, with Simmons' Amy Cronin scoring for the Sharks and Kaitlyn Bullen (New Sharon, Maine/Mt. Blue) answering for the Beavers.

Senior Annie Agnew (Guilford, Maine/Piscataquis Community) scored UMaine-Farmington's first goal of the game just 96 seconds into the contest, setting an early tone for the Beavers offensively. Barry was credited with an assist on the goal, giving her five points on the day. 

UMaine-Farmington outshot Simmons, 26-12, and took 11 penalty corners while denying Simmons a single penalty corner opportunity. Beavers goalie Curran Brierley (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) logged a pair of saves in the UMF goal, while Simmons goalie Renna Smith was credited with 15 saves in the Sharks' cage.

The Beavers complete their two-game Boston trip on Sunday, Sept. 23, when they face Lasell College in a North Atlantic Conference matchup.
