Beavers clipped by Bowdoin in 7-0 shutout

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Six different players recorded goals to lead the sixth-ranked Bowdoin College field hockey team to a 7-0 win over UMaine-Farmington on Tuesday evening.

The Beavers drop to 3-4 with the loss, while the Polar Bears improve to 5-1.

Cathleen Smith wasted little time getting Bowdoin on the board, scoring barely five minutes into the game on a redirected corner shot by Brooke Phinney at 30:39. Smith struck again just a few moments later, accepting a pass from Kassey Matoin that she deftly flicked over a leaping UMaine-Farmington defender and into the top right corner of the net at 25:50.

Kassey Matoin continued the scoring with a sneaky shot from the middle of the circle that surprised the Beaver defense and slipped into the back of the net at 19:42. Pam Herter tipped home a Brooke Phinney shot to round out the half with her first tally of the season at 24:23.

UMaine-Farmington goalie Felisha Taylor (Chelsea, Maine/Cony) held the Polar Bears at bay with a diving save on a Katie Riley breakaway to open the second half. Riley would not be denied, however, and found the back of the net at 31:00 on a one-timer off of a hard back door pass from Phinney. Adrienne O'Donnell increased the lead with a diving effort to knock home a loose rebound on the goal line at 18:10. Emily Simonton knocked home a shot at close range to conclude the scoring with 3:21 remaining in the game.

Bowdoin owned the advantage in both shots (19-0) and penalty corners (20-3).

On the defensive end of the field, Curran Brierley (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) made eight saves over 35 minutes in the first half while allowing four goals, before giving way to Taylor who made seven saves and surrendered three goals in the second stanza. Kayla Lessard and Hannah Gartnereach played 35 minutes for Bowdoin but were not forced to make a save.

UMF returns home this weekend, hosting Saint Joseph College of Maine on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 10:30 a.m. on Prescott Field.
