Field hockey trounces Simmons, 6-1

FARMINGTON, Maine – Six different University of Maine at Farmington players accounted for the scoring to lead the Beavers past visiting Simmons College, 6-1, in a North Atlantic Conference field hockey matchup Sunday at Prescott Field.

Altogether, eighth different UMaine-Farmington players earned points in the win, which boosted the Beavers' record to 4-4 overall, 3-1 in the NAC. Simmons fell to 6-6 overall with the loss, 0-2 in conference play.

Senior Kate Storey got UMF on the board barely four-and-a-half minutes into the contest, weaving her way through a crowd in front the Simmons goal and beating Sharks goalie Renna Smith with a low shot at the 30:33 mark of the half.

Senior Kashley Weymouth put the Beavers up 2-0 over the Sharks with 20:24 showing in the first half, finishing on a Meghan Hughes blast from the top of the circle. Sophomore Delainey Kein extended UMaine-Farmington's lead to 3-0 with 16:03 remaining, when she tapped home a loose ball by the left post.

Simmons' Amy Cronin broke Farmington's shutout bid when she slipped a shot past UMF goalie Curran Brierley with 15:12 left in the opening half. Seneca Martensson, who sent the ball over to Cronin, was credited with the assist.

UMaine-Farmington put the game away with three unanswered goals in the second half.

Senior Kaitlyn Bullen beat Smith on a shot at the 20:35 mark of the second half, while sophomore Meghan Hughes scored with 8:36 remaining in the game. Chelsea Morley assisted on both UMF goals.

Sophomore Susan Newkirk scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the game's final minute off a Whitney pass.

UMaine-Farmington outshot Simmons, 21-6, and had a commanding 15-9 advantage in penalty corners. Brierley finished the day with three saves, while Smith notched eight saves in the Simmons goal. 

UMaine-Farmington is idle until the weekend, when it travels to Henniker, N.H., to face New England College on Saturday, Oct. 12, in a 1:00 p.m. game. Simmons plays NAC foe Rivier University on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 5:00 p.m. in Nashua, N.H.
