Men's hoops falls to Bates

Box Score

LEWISTON, Maine – Sophomore Mike Boornazian scored a game-high 21 points to lead Bates College men's basketball past the University of Maine at Farmington, 75-54, in Alumni Gym on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Bates Tip Off Round Robin.

The Bobcats (2-0) never trailed in the game and held a lead as large as 24 points late in the second half against the Beavers (1-1). Bates defeated UMaine-Farmington after dropping the previous two meetings to Farmington.

Boornazian paced the Bobcats in scoring for the second time in as many games, shooting 9-of-14 from the field and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc while also grabbing eight rebounds. Junior Graham Safford  – the only other double-figure scorer for Bates – totaled 12 points, a career-high eight assists, and six rebounds.

For UMaine-Farmington, junior Pet Sumner scored a team-high 16 points, connecting on four 3-pointers in the process, and senior center Ben Johnson pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to go with eight points.

Senior forward Andrew Dickey tallied nine points, mostly on his 7-of-8 effort at the free-throw line. Senior forward Nate Carson and reserves Sam Leal and Logan Nichols all dished out three assists.

Bates held advantages in points in the paint (32-18), points off turnovers (24-10), and second-chance points (21-7) while out-rebounding UMF, 55-35. The Beavers shot just 32.7 percent (17-of-52) from the field, Farmington's lowest single game shooting percentage since its 2011-12 season opener.

With the score tied at 19-19 midway through the first half, Boornazian scored the game's next eight points on a pair of 3-pointers and a layup to give the Bobcats a 27-19 lead with 6:17 left in the opening half. The Beavers remained within eight points at 32-24 before Bates closed the half with a 9-2 run to take a 41-26 edge into the break with Adam Philpott converting on a pair of triples and Marcus Delpeche dunking during the streak.

Farmington pulled within 52-40 after a Johnson layup with 11 minutes remaining in the game, but Bates responded with a 10-0 run over the next two and a half minutes to capture a 62-40 advantage with 8:36 to play. Billy Selmon scored five points and Delpeche threw down his second dunk as part of that stretch. The Bobcats maintained at least an 18-point cushion for the remainder of the game.

Bates went 15-of-36 (.427) from the field in the second half alone, and finished the game shooting 38.2 percent from the floor.

UMaine-Farmington returns to the hardwood on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 7:00 p.m. when it plays at Colby, while Bates hosts Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
