Colby shoots its way past UMF men's hoops

Box Score

WATERVILLE, Maine – Colby College shot 43.4 percent from the field and held the University of Maine at Farmington to 29.6 percent shooting, and posted a 69-58 non-conference men's basketball win over the Beavers on Tuesday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

Senior forward Andrew Dickey tallied 24 points to lead UMaine-Farmington (1-2), the bulk of that coming on a 4-of-9 effort from 3-point range and a 10-of-11 mark at the free-throw line. Senior center Ben Johnson charted 15 points and 14 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.

Sam Leal dished out six assists for the Beavers and logged three steals.

Three Mules finished in double figures, paced by sophomore forward Ryan Jann with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Luke Westman and Chris Hudnut each tallied 13 points, with Westman also handing out five assists.

Colby (2-1) built a 16-point lead early in the second half, and still held that margin at 49-33 with 14:05 remaining in the game.

A Johnson layup and a Dickey trey helped cut the margin to 11 points. The Beavers continued to chip away at the Mules' lead, and Farmington got to within five of Colby, 52-47, on Leal's layup with 9:40 showing on the clock.

The Mules got back-to-back layups from Hudnut and Michael Loginoff, and a 3-pointer by Jann had Colby back in front by 12, 59-47, at the 6:52 mark.

UMaine-Farmington rallied with a 9-0 run, including eight points by Dickey, to trim the deficit to 59-56 with just over four minutes remaining, but that was as close as the Beavers would get. Colby scored five straight points while holding Farmington to just 1-of-5 from the floor over the remainder of the game.

In the first half, Farmington was within two points of Colby at the halfway point of the frame, 17-15, following a pair of foul shots by Connor Hasson.

Westman answered with two free throws for the Mules, and Colby proceeded to build on its lead with back-to-back jumpers by Hudnut. Three free throws by Patrick Stewart extended the Colby lead to 30-19 with 2:57 remaining in the frame, and the Mules held a 35-22 lead at the break.

UMaine-Farmington is idle until Monday, Nov. 25, when it hosts St. Joseph's College at 7:30 p.m. at Dearborn Gym.
