Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine -- The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team dramatically outshot Lyndon State College and controlled the boards for much of the game on Saturday afternoon, two things that have been keys to the Beavers' success over the last two seasons.
It's just that neither of those things determined the outcome on this particular Saturday.
UMaine-Farmington committed 20 turnovers leading to 25 Lyndon State points, as the previously winless Hornets posted an 85-74 win over the Beavers in Dearborn Gym.
Lyndon State (1-3, 1-1 NAC) took full advantage of UMaine-Farmington's (4-3, 2-1 NAC) 21 fouls, going 32-of-38 (.842) at the free-throw line in the win. The lion's share of those came from David Johnson, who was 10-of-12 at the stripe on his way to a game-high 20 points.
Rob Alers came off the bench for Lyndon to score 16 points, while George Carle and Howard Lyles added 11 and 10 points respectively.
Senior Garrett Clemmer tallied 18 for the Beavers, who suffered their first loss to the Hornets after four straight wins over the last two seasons. Senior Ben Johnson turned the double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds – but 13 of those rebounds came during the first half when UMaine-Farmington built a 40-37 halftime lead.
Sophomore reserve Nick Hilton finished with 12 points, while junior Pet Sumner logged 10 points.
Farmington built its first half lead by dominating the glass, 26 to 16, and shooting 46.4 percent to the Hornets' 29.4 percent.
But Lyndon State stepped up its shooting in the second half, connecting on 14 of 24 shots from the floor for a .583 field goal percentage.
The Hornets knotted the game at 42-42 at the 17:14 mark of the second half on a Trayvond Barbary layup, and took the lead soon thereafter on a pair of Josh Bosworth foul shots. Those points came during a five minute scoring drought for the Beavers, finally ending on a Johnson layup with 13:42 remaining.
By then, the Hornets had a 51-44 lead, and Lyndon stretched that lead to 13 points, 71-58, by the 6:23 mark.
UMaine-Farmington fought back with back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers by Clemmer, trimming the Lyndon State lead to four points with 3:27 to play, by the Beavers would get no closer.
UMaine-Farmington returns to the court on Tuesday night, Dec. 10, at 7:00 p.m. when it hosts the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference tilt. Lyndon State returns home for its next game when it faces Westfield State at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 9.
