Beavers' late rally in game two salvages senior day split vs. MMA

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FARMINGTON, Maine – University of Maine at Farmington freshman Haley Berry (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) singled home the go-ahead runs in the fifth inning to help propel the Beavers to an 11-8 win over visiting Maine Maritime Academy, in game two of a North Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader Friday at Prescott Field.

The win helped UMaine-Farmington (10-11, 7-7 NAC) salvage a split against Maine Maritime (12-15, 8-8 NAC), after the Mariners posted a 6-3 come-from-behind win in the first game of the twin bill.

Berry's one-out pinch-hit single to right field in the bottom of the fifth scored Meryl Bond (Jefferson, Maine/Erskine Academy) and Michelle Cote (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy), giving the Beavers an 8-7 lead.

Farmington leadoff hitter Amy Jones (Augusta, Maine/Cony) plated what proved to be the game winning runs on the next at bat, driving a double into left-center field that allowed Berry and Jillian Withee (Salem Township, Maine/Mt. Abram) to cross for a 10-7 UMF lead.

Jones advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Emily Soule's (Chelsea, Maine/Cony) grounder back to the pitcher.

Maine Maritime got one run back in the top of the sixth when Hayley Rae (Belfast, Maine/Belfast) singled home Leah Jackson (Dedham, Maine/Brewer). Jackson got aboard earlier in the frame on a leadoff single.

Jones finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and four runs batted in, including a two-run home run to left field in the third inning. Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine/Mt. Blue) also went 3-for-4 with two RBI, including a solo home run to account for Farmington's one run in the second inning.

Sabrina Keach (Chesterville, Maine/Mt. Blue), Jackson, and Rae all had a pair of hits for Maine Maritime.

UMF starter Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) earned the win with a six-strikeout performance, while Mariner reliever Abby Yeo (Bucksport, Maine/Bucksport) took the loss in a two-thirds of an inning stint in the circle.

In game one, Farmington held a 3-2 lead through six innings, but Maine Maritime rallied with four runs on three hits and a UMF error in the top of the seventh to steal the win. Jackson keyed the comeback with a two-out, three-run double to center field, plating Keach, Cindy Schultz (Bingham, Maine/Upper Kenebec), and Jessica Menges (Old Forge, N.Y./Town of Webb). All three runs were unearned.

The Beavers plated one run in the first when Jones reached on a double and an error, and was sacrificed home by Shelby Bryant (South Portland, Maine/Catherine McAuley). Two more UMF runs crossed in the third on RBI singles by Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine/Hermon) and Bartlett.

Maine Maritime answered with two runs in the sixth, with Menges singling home Flannery and Jackson eventually crossing while play continued.

Yeo picked up the complete game win for Maine Maritime despite allowing 10 Farmington hits and three walks, but recording five strikeouts. Soule fanned six Mariners over her seven innings in the circle, and allowed six runs, two earned, on eight hits and two walks.

UMaine-Farmington closes out the conference slate on Saturday, April 20, at Husson in a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader, while Maine Maritime hosts UMaine-Presque Isle in a 2:00 p.m. twinbill in Castine, Maine.
