Three-run double in seventh lifts Gordon past UMF

Box Score

WENHAM, Mass. – Gordon College pitcher Skylar Bareford belted a three-run double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Scots to a 9-7 win over the University of Maine at Farmington, in game one of a non-conference softball matchup Tuesday night the Gordon Softball Field.

Game two of the twinbill was called due to darkness after three-and-a-half innings.

UMaine-Farmington (2-1) trailed 6-5 heading into the seventh, but plated two runs in the top of the frame to take the lead. Emily Soule (Chelsea, Maine/Cony) got aboard with a one-out single up the middle, advanced on a Michelle Cote (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy), and scored on Amy Jones' (Augusta, Maine/Cony) base hit down the left field line.

Cote eventually crossed on a passed ball to give the Beavers the lead.

Gordon's seventh-inning rally started with Kendall Bukuras' double into center, followed by a pair of walks issued to lead-off hitter Rachel Ryder and Kara Pepper. That set the stage for Bareford's walk-off double to give the Scots the win.

Soule and freshman teammate Shelby Bryant (South Portland, Maine/Catherine McAuley) led UMaine-Farmington with 3-for-4 efforts at the plate, with Soule crossing the plate twice. Jones, Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine/Mt. Blue), and Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine/Hermon) each had a pair of hits, with Bartlett belting the game's only home run – a three-run blast in the sixth that briefly gave UMaine-Farmington a 5-4 lead.

The Scots regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. One of those runs scored on an RBI single by Bareford, one of her team-high three hits on the day. Bukuras and Marissa Meenan each had two hits for Gordon.

UMF starter Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) went three complete innings for the Beavers, fanning six Scots while allowing four runs, three earned, on two hits and five walks. Bartlett came on to start the fourth, and also charted six strikeouts while allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits.

Bareford went the distance in the circle for Gordon to get the win, but was roughed up for 14 hits while allowing four walks.

UMaine-Farmington returns to the diamond on Saturday, April 6, when it travels to New England College for a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader.
