Winchenbach pitches Beavers to split versus NEC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FARMINGTON, Maine – University of Maine at Farmington senior pitcher Dale Winchenbach (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) held New England College to two runs on five hits to lead the Beavers to a 5-2 win over the Pilgrims, in game one of Saturday's North Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader at Hippach Field.

UMaine-Farmington (7-15, 6-12 NAC) could not complete the sweep, however, and dropped game two, 8-4, in eight innings.

In game one, Winchenbach retired the side in four of the seven innings, and finished the night with six strikeouts of 27 batters faced on his way to the complete game win.

A four-run fourth inning boosted the Beavers to the win, keyed by Brett Wallingford's (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) two-run single down the right field line. Joe Sullivan (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) and Brian Jenkins (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) each had RBI hits in the fourth to aid the UMF cause.

Sullivan and Ben Keene (Livermore, Maine/Spruce Mountain) each finished 2-for-3 for the Beavers.

The Beavers erased a 4-0 deficit through four innings in game two, tying the game in the seventh on Zach Keene's (Livermore, Maine/Livermore Falls) sacrifice fly to score Matt Woodbury (Fairfield, Maine/Lawrence). Woodbury reached on a leadoff double down the left field line.

The Pilgrims opened the eighth with a walk and an RBI double by Brandon Adorno (Ft. Myers, Fla.) for the go-ahead run, and a base hit by Scott Fortune (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) plated Adorno. Matthew Krum (Paramus, N.J.) belted a two-run home run just a few feet inside the left field foul pole, giving NEC an 8-4 lead.

Farmington's rally effort in the bottom of the frame included one-out singles by Dustin McCrossin (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) and Brian Jenkins (Gorham, Maine/Gorham), but Pilgrim reliever Francesco DiRe (Barrington, R.I.) induced a pair of fly outs to end the game.

Krum was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI to lead the Pilgrims, while Keene was 3-for-3 with two runs batted in. Winchenbach also had three hits for the Beavers. DiRe picked up the win for NEC in his two innings of relief work, while UMF reliever Ethan Jean (Jackson, Maine/Mt. View) was charged with the loss.

The two teams complete the four-game NAC series on Sunday, April 21, at noon at Hippach Field.
