UMF falls to Colby in single game

Box Score

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College's Kelsey Yardumian played for the first time all season after missing the opening 24 games due to injury, but made the most of her opportunity after pitching Colby College to an 8-0 victory over University of Maine at Farmington on Thursday at Crafts Field.

The Mules, who won the game in six innings due to the eight-run rule, improved to 11-14 overall. The Beavers have the same record after the setback.

Yardumian allowed just three singles, struck out six, and walked five.

The Mules scored three runs in the second inning to take control. Brianne Wheeler led off with a single and Lauren Becker reached on an error. After Tori Sansone moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt, Erica Pulford followed with an RBI single to plate Wheeler. Pulford moved over to second on defensive indifference and then scored with Becker on Katherine Zafirson's two-run single.

Colby added three more runs in the third inning on two hits and two UMF errors. Meaghan Lewia reached by error to lead off the inning and Carylanne Wolfington followed with a single. Lewia eventually scored when Emily Schatz reached on a fielder's choice, while Wolfington came in on the second error of the inning. Schatz reached second base on the error and scored on Wheeler's double.

The Mules added a lone run in the fifth inning when Wolfington was hit by a pitch to start the inning and eventually scored on a groundout by Becker. The run to end the game happened in the sixth, with Kelsey Park reaching on a two-out walk. Lewia smacked a double to score Park with the eighth run.

Zafirson had two hits and two RBI for the Mules. Wolfington was 1-for-2 and scored two runs.

Shelby Bryant (South Portland, Maine/Catherine McAuley), Haley Berry (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) and Hannah Lust (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) had singles for the Beavers. Starter Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) was charged with the loss for the Beavers, after allowing five earned runs on seven hits and a walk.

UMaine-Farmington opens North Atlantic Conference Tournament championship round play on Friday, April 26, when it faces Husson University.
