Beavers take split out of softball doubleheader with Johnson State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

JOHNSON, Vt. – The University of Maine at Farmington softball freshman Emily Soule (Chelsea, Maine/Cony) scattered six hits and fanned five Johnson State College batters to lead the Beavers to a 7-3 win over the Badgers, in game one of a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader Sunday at Mineart Field.

Johnson State rallied with a single run in the bottom of the seventh to eke out a 4-3 win over UMaine-Farmington in game two, giving the Beavers a split on the day.

Soule held Johnson State to just two earned runs while issuing one walk in the complete game win. The Badgers hit just .207 on the day against the rookie lefthander.

Trailing 2-1 through four innings, the Beavers tied the game in the fifth when pinch runner Dayle Jordan (Greene, Maine/St. Dominic) crossed thanks to a Johnson State error on Devin Fitzgerald's (Casco, Maine/Lake Region) grounder back to the pitcher. UMF took the lead in the sixth, when Meryl Bond's (Jefferson, Maine/Erskine) ground out to third allowed pinch runner Meghan Plant (Fairfax, Vt./Rice) to score.

Farmington plated four runs in the seventh on three hits and one Johnson State error, with Kaitlyn Bartlett's (Chesterville, Maine/Mt. Blue) two-run home run keying the inning. Amy Jones (Augusta, Maine/Cony) plated one run earlier in the frame on a base hit.

Bartlett finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBI, while Hannah Lust (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) had a double and a single.

In game two, Johnson State's Emily Comins floated a two-out single into center field that allowed Alex Bean to score in the bottom of the seventh inning and lift the Badgers to the 4-3 walk-off victory.

The Beavers plated two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 3-3, with the hope of forcing extra innings. Pinch runner Michelle Cote (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) came home on a squeeze play executed by Fitzgerald for the first UMF run, and Jones drove in Jillian Withee (Salem Township, Maine/Mt. Abram) with a double to knot the game.

Bean doubled to lead off the Johnson State half of the seventh, and the next two batters struck out and flied out. However Katja Langma singled Bean over to third to keep the inning alive, setting the table for Comins game winning hit.

Bartlett got the start in the circle for the Beavers, and fanned three Badgers over three complete innings while allowing three earned runs on six hits. Emma Vaillancourt (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) came on to start the fourth inning in the circle for Farmington, and allowed four hits and two walks with two strikeouts. She also allowed the Badgers' game-winning run, and was charged with the loss.

Andrea Williams went the distance for Johnson in the win, scattering eight hits while striking out five UMF batters.

Jones was the only Farmington batter with two hits, and she also finished with two runs batted in.

The Beavers conclude their six-game road trip on Monday at Lyndon State with an NAC doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
