BANGOR, Maine - Husson University baseball downed the University of Maine at Farmington, 18-4 and 9-6, in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader Tuesday at the Winkin Complex.
In game one, the two teams played through four scoreless innings before the Eagles' Jordan Carter hit a triple all the way to the fence in right center followed by a single up the middle by Ben McLain in the top of the fifth.
Husson added two more runs in the top of the sixth. Shawn Smith led off the inning with a walk and was then successful in is attempt to steal second base. J.T. Whitten followed with a triple down the right field line, which scored Smith from second. Brandon Campbell brought Whitten across the plate with a double to left center. Ian McAlister (Dover, N.H./Marshwood, Maine) came in for UMF to relieve starter Casey Ashey (Searsport, Maine/Searsport) following the two runs.
The Beavers would rally in the bottom of the sixth to bring four runs across which ultimately gave them a 4-3 lead. Farmington's runs came off a Tom Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine Academy) single which brought in a run, an Ethan Jean (Jackson, Maine/Mt. View) single which plated two more, and a Ben Keene (Livermore, Maine/Spruce Mountain) sacrifice fly that brought a run.
Husson starting pitcher Dan Whitney gave up three runs before Casey Estes came in for relief and Estes gave up the final run of the inning.
The Eagles took advantage of seven hits and five errors in the top of the seventh to score 15 runs and regain the lead for the 18-4 win. A two-run triple by Smith and a three-run blast by Carter keyed the inning.
The Beavers were held to just five hits in game one, with Brett Wallingford (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) and Matt Woodbury (Fairfield, Maine/Lawrence) each getting doubles.
Husson opened the scoring in game two with seven runs in the top of the second inning on four hits, two errors, a bases loaded wild pitch, and a hit batsman.
Farmington notched a run in the bottom of the third off a Woodbury sacrifice fly to left field that brought Wallingford across the plate from third.
Husson put up two more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 9-1 lead, but Farmington got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth on Wallingford's RBI single to left field. UMF plated four runs in the sixth, including a pair of RBI off a Woodbury single into right center, but the Beavers would get no closer.
Wallingford went 4-for-5 in game two with two runs scored and two batted in, while Grayson Beressi (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs.
UMaine-Farmington continues NAC play on Wednesday, March 10, when it faces Thomas College.
