Beavers close the books on 2013 against D-I UMaine

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington got a run in the first inning but couldn't put any more across the plate and fell to the University of Maine, 11-1, Wednesday night at Mahaney Diamond.

With the loss in its season finale, UMaine-Farmington ended the season with a 9-23 overall record. UMaine improved to 27-17 overall with the win.

The Beavers plated their only run in the first when Dale Winchenbach (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) drew a leadoff walk, and scored on Matt Woodbury's (Fairfield, Maine/Lawrence) triple to right field.

Maine answered back with three runs in the bottom of the first. Colin Gay and Brian Doran drew back-to-back walks, and Michael Fransoso was hit to load the bases. Gay scored on a wild pitch, with Doran and Fransoso both scoring when Eric White singled to center field.

Maine added a run in the second. Sam Balzano singled, stole second and then scored when Alex Calbick singled. 

Fran Whitten belted his second home run of the season with a shot to right field in the top of the fourth, giving the Black Bears a 5-1 lead.

Maine loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Connolly walked, Whitten singled and Balzano reached on an error. Connolly scored on a Gay sacrifice fly. Whitten and Balzano both scored when Fransoso singled. Shane Bussey, who was hit, scored when White singled.

Maine added a run in the seventh inning. Whitten doubled to right field. Gay reached on a fielder's choice and Whitten was safe at third base. The duo then pulled off a double steal, with Gay stealing second and Whitten home.

Maine capped the scoring in the bottom of the eighth inning when rookie Brenden Geary belted his first career home run.

Ben Pearson (North Stonington, Conn./Wheeler) went 5.1 innings for UMaine Farmington. He allowed nine runs, seven of which were earned, on six hits. He falls to 1-6 on the season. Kyle Peterson (Bethel, Maine/Telstar), Ian McAlister (Dover, N.H./Marshwood, Maine) and Ethan Jean (Jackson, Maine/Mt. View) also pitched in relief for the Beavers.

Scott Heath got the start and went three innings on the mound. He allowed just one run on a pair of hits while striking out three. He improves to 1-2 on the season. Shaun Coughlin pitched three scoreless innings in relief. Burk FitzPatrick retired the two batters that he faced. Connolly retired the final batter of the seventh inning. Whitten and Luke Morrill each pitched a scoreless inning to close the game.
