USM overcomes UMF field hockey in OT

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine  -- University of Southern Maine senior Natalie Harkins scored the game-winning goal in the fourth minute of overtime to lead USM to a 3-2 win over the University of Maine at Farmington (0-1), Wednesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

Harkins scored her fourth goal of the season capitalizing on an assist from junior forward Peyton Dostie.  After the Huskies won the ball in their defensive third, Dostie used her speed to break away from the UMF defense down the left side of the field.  After drawing out UMF junior goalkeeper Curran Brierley, Dostie centered the ball across the goal cage where an on-running Harkins calmly slotted the ball into the net.

Despite holding a 16-9 advantage in shots, the Huskies trailed UMaine Farmington early.  Sophomore forward Meghan Hughes gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute redirecting a pass from junior Chelsea Morley following a penalty corner.

The Huskies (3-2) scored the equalizer in the 28th minute to head into the halftime break knotted at one goal each.  Freshman Samantha Crosman scored her first collegiate goal on an assist from senior Cristina Mountain.

Early in the second half , USM's Jessica Boghosian scored to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead in the 38th.  Boghosian drove in the goal off an assist from senior Rebecca Pratt following a penalty corner.   However, UMF rallied in the 45th minute to force the overtime period when senior Kaitlyn Bullen found the back of the net off of an assist from senior Kashley Weymouth

Both teams had chances in overtime before USM broke through for the game-winner. Brierley made a pair of saves in overtime, while Southern Maine senior goalkeeper Kayla Kennedy turned away a strong shot from Weymouth.

Brierley played well in goal for the Beavers making 10 saves in the loss, including two one-on-one attempts from Dostie in regulation. Kennedy made five saves to earn her first win of the season.

Southern Maine returns to actions on Saturday (5:00 p.m.) at Bridgewater State for a Little East Conference game.  UMaine Farmington hosts Endicott on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
