Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine – Castleton State College scored once in each half and posted a 2-0 North Atlantic Conference field hockey win over the University of Maine at Farmington, Sunday afternoon at Prescott Field.
Castleton (5-4, 3-0 NAC) remains undefeated in NAC play, while UMaine-Farmington (3-3, 2-1, NAC) suffered its first conference loss.
The Beavers had some early scoring opportunities, including six penalty corners over the first 25 minutes of the game, but were unable to capitalize.
The Spartans eventually broke onto the scoreboard with 6:22 remaining in the opening frame. After a flurry of Castleton shots resulted in a penalty corner for the Spartans, Kristy Pinkham sent a blast past UMF goalie Curran Brierley to give Castleton a 1-0 lead. Rachel Preusser had the assist on the goal.
Castleton also scored its second goal on a penalty corner. Blake Wardwell scored with 18:03 showing on the game clock, with Pinkham and Preusser picking up assists.
The Spartans outshot the Beavers 14-7 during the contest, but UMaine-Farmington had a 16-13 advantage in penalty corner opportunities. Castleton goalie Jessica Galatioto recorded five saves, while Brierley charted 11 stops in the UMF cage.
UMaine-Farmington heads to Brunswick, Maine, to face Bowdoin College on Thursday, Oct. 3, in a 6:00 p.m. start. Castleton is idle during the week, and will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5, when it hosts Saint Joseph's College (Maine).
