Turnovers undermine UMF's bid for road win at Colby-Sawyer

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Colby-Sawyer College converted 28 University of Maine at Farmington turnovers into 31 points on its way to a 73-68 North Atlantic Conference men's basketball victory, Friday night at Coffin Field House.

UMaine-Farmington fell to 5-6 overall, 3-2 in the NAC, while Colby-Sawyer improved to 5-6, 4-1.

The Beavers committed 16 turnovers in the first half alone, but still managed to hold a 34-29 lead at the half. A Pet Sumner 3-pointer broke a 27-27 deadlock with 3:05 left to play in the frame, and a pair of foul shots by Uriah Forest-Bulley and an Andrew Dickey layup expanded the Farmington lead.

Colby-Sawyer took the lead with 15:20 showing in the second half on Wol Majong's 3-pointer, followed quickly by a Jack Maynard layup to give the Chargers a 43-40 advantage.

Another Sumner trey tied the game at 43-43, but a Stephen Thorpe answered for the Chargers by hitting the second of two free throws with 13:54 remaining to give Colby-Sawyer the lead.

The Chargers scored on three of their next four possessions while keeping the Beavers off the scoreboard – a 9-0 run that left Colby-Sawyer holding a 52-43 lead with 11:26 remaining.

UMaine-Farmington pulled to within two points of Colby-Sawyer, 67-65, with 55 seconds remaining on a Sumner layup. A Majong layup extended the Chargers' lead, and Colby-Sawyer went 4-of-4 at the free-throw line over the final 10 seconds to secure the win.

Four Beavers finished with double-digit scoring totals, led by Dickey's 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Sumner tallied 16 points, including four 3-pointers for 12 points, while Ben Johnson charted 13 points and completed the double-double with 13 rebounds. Garrett Clemmer scored 10 points, while Nate Carson dished out six assists.

Koang Thok paced the Chargers with 16 points, with Maynard and Zach Bean had 13 and 12 points respectively.

UMaine-Farmington concludes the two-game swing through New Hampshire on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 1:00 p.m. when it faces New England College.
