Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine – Three University of Maine at Farmington players finished in double digits to pace the Beavers to a sorely needed 67-49 North Atlantic Conference victory over New England College, in men's basketball action Friday night at Dearborn Gym.
Senior Andrew Dickey paced UMaine-Farmington with 17 points and seven rebounds, while senior Ben Johnson charted 13 points and seven boards. Junior Pet Sumner chipped in with 12 points.
Senior Sam Leal dished out six assists with three steals in the win.
UMaine-Farmington improved to 8-9 overall with the win, 6-5 in the NAC, which gives the sixth-place Beavers a season sweep over seventh-place New England College (6-12, 3-8 NAC). The win was also marked consecutive wins for Farmington for the first time since early December.
Dezron Wilson paced New England College with 13 points, while Jonathan Byrnes tallied 10 points and pulled in six rebounds. Robin Wilson also grabbed six boards to go with his eight points.
UMaine-Farmington's command of the offensive boards in the second half helped the Beavers turn an eight-point halftime lead into a 18-point victory. UMF finished with 17 offensive rebounds, 10 of those in the second stanza, leading to 13 second-chance points for the Beavers.
NEC cut Farmington's lead down to six points, 50-44, following Wilson's layup with 6:29 remaining, but the Pilgrims would remain stuck on 44 points for the next four minutes. The Beavers went on a 12-0 run over that span to take charge of the contest, with free throws by Sumner and Jimmie Chaisson helping clinch the win along with a layup by freshman Ryan Ripley.
The Beavers complete their home stand on Saturday, Feb. 1, when they host Colby-Sawyer College at 3:00 p.m. at Dearborn Gym. New England College travels to Waterville, Maine, on Saturday to face Thomas College in a 3:00 p.m. tip.
