Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine – Castleton State College senior Logan White's 3-pointer with 52 seconds remaining gave the visiting Spartans a lead they held the rest of the way in a 98-92 win over the University of Maine at Farmington, in North Atlantic Conference men's basketball action Saturday at Dearborn Gym.
Castleton State improved to 15-2 in the conference, 17-7 overall, while UMaine-Farmington fell to 10-13, 8-8 in the NAC.
White's trey gave the Spartans a 92-90 lead, and marked the ninth lead change in a see-saw half.
Nate Carson missed his 3-point attempt at the other end of the floor that would have tied the game for the Beavers, and UMaine-Farmington was forced to begin fouling.
Castleton State made six of its seven free throws over the last 30 seconds of the game to hang on for the victory, while Farmington managed just one basket – a layup by Pet Sumner with six seconds showing on the clock.
A Sumner layup with 20 seconds remaining that would have cut the margin to 94-92 was wiped out by a foul call on Ben Johnson, giving the senior center his fifth foul and forcing him from the game.
Castleton finished with four players in double digits, led by White with 27 points on 8-of-17 shooting with six 3-pointers. Troy Davine came off the bench to score 21 points for the Spartans on an 8-of-12 effort from the field, with five treys.
Altogether, Castleton connected on 15 of its 36 3-point attempts (.417), and was 34-of-74 overall (.459) from the field.
Johnson finished with 29 points and 16 rebounds for UMaine-Farmington behind his 12-of-20 effort from the floor. Andrew Dickey tallied 19 points while Garrett Clemmer and Pet Sumner had 15 points each. Carson added 10 points and four assists.
UMaine-Farmington held a 48-36 lead at the break, after shooting 18-of-36 from the field (.500) in the first half while holding Castleton state to just 12-of-27 (.324) shooting.
The Spartans were out front 27-26 at the 9:14 mark of the opening frame, when the Beavers surged into the lead with a 14-1 run. Dickey netted a pair of buckets during the run, while six other Farmington players contributed points.
UMaine-Farmington heads onto the road for its next contest, a matchup with arch-rival Husson University on Wednesday, Feb. 19, in Bangor, Maine. Castleton State closes out its regular season on Saturday, Feb. 22, when it faces Green Mountain College.
