Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. -- University of Maine at Farmington senior Ben Johnson had 24 points and 26 rebounds to help lead the sixth seeded Beavers to an 80-61 upset over third seed Colby-Sawyer College in Tuesday's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) quarterfinals.
UMaine-Farmington improves to 12-14 and will play second seed Castleton State on Friday evening at the tournament's top seed, Husson. Colby-Sawyer falls to 14-11.
Johnson had a double-double in each half with 14 points and 11 boards in the first and 10 points and 15 rebounds in the second. He was 12-20 from the floor and added four assists.
Not to be outshined, UMaine-Farmington's Andrew Dickey also recorded a double-double of a game-high 26 points and 11 rebounds. At the 18:03 mark in the second frame, Dickey scored his 1000th career point. Junior Pet Sumner chipped in 14 points off the bench.
Dickey becomes the 25th player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points; the senior forward from Cape Elizabeth, Maine, now has 1,016 career points and ranks 22nd among Farmington's all-time scoring leaders.
Colby-Sawyer was led by junior Zach Bean. He scored 17 points on 7-13 shooting. Sophomore Jake Maynard just missed a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Junior Mike Dias had six points and a team best nine rebounds.
Johnson opened the scoring with a jumper 40 seconds into the game. Colby-Sawyer responded with a pair of buckets from Bean to take a 4-2 lead, but that would be the last lead of the contest for the Chargers. The Beavers scored the next seven points capped by another Johnson layup to take a 9-4 lead six minutes into the frame.
The Chargers were able to stay close over the next several minutes before the visitors used a 10-0 run in a 3:23 span to take its largest lead of the half at 28-13. Colby-Sawyer pulled within nine at the end of the half on a trey from sophomore Wol Majong with a couple of seconds left. UMF led 37-28 at the break.
Peter Donato began the second half scoring with a layup to pull the Chargers within seven. The Beavers then went on a 9-0 run with six points coming from Dickey to push the advantage back to 46-30. Colby-Sawyer continued to try to chip away, but every time the Chargers cut the deficit to 10, UMF answered with a bucket to keep the double-digit lead intact. The Beavers shot 50 percent in the second half en route to the 80-61 win, while Colby-Sawyer shot 30.2 percent.
The Beavers finished the game with a 55-36 edge on the glass and a 40-16 advantage in points in the paint.
UMaine-Farmington shot 49.2 percent from the field (32-of-65), while holding Colby-Sawyer to a 33.8 percent shooting clip (25-of-74). The Beavers also dominated on the boards with a 55 to 36 rebounding advantage.
