Baseball drops two tight games at Husson

BANGOR, Maine -- The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team saw host Husson University rally for a game one win while the Beavers' own comeback effort fell short in game two as the Beavers fell to the Eagles in both ends of a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader, 2-1 and 3-1, Saturday afternoon at the Winkin Complex.

Husson allowed UMaine-Farmington's only run of game one on a Jordan Croteau single in the second inning. Jimmy Neal advanced to second on the play and Dustin McCrossin scored to make it 1-0.

The Eagles scored their tying and go-ahead runs with two outs in the top of the seventh.

Catcher Jordan Carter was hit by pitch in the leadoff spot, and Ben McLain laid down a sacrifice in the next at-bat to push pinch runner Seth Freudenberger to second. Three batters later, Brand Gendreau singled to left to score Freudenberger, and J.T. Whitten plated Dylan Foster on a base hit through the right side of the infield.

For UMaine-Farmington, Joe Sullivan picked up the loss after allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts in six-and-two-thirds innings. Freshman Brandon Soper came into the game for the final out in the top of the seventh.

McCrossin, Neal, and sophomore Sean Cabaniss each had two hits for the Beavers.

In game two, Husson picked up three third-inning runs en route to a 3-1 win.

The Eagles scored all their runs with two outs. Kyle Bishop doubled home Foster and Whitten, and Meehan crossed on a wild pitch to the next batter to account for all the Husson runs.

In the bottom of the frame, UMaine-Farmington put together a rally of its own.

A Croteau single to center started things off, and a two-out single into center field by Brett Wallingford was stretched to two bases as the Eagles tried to get Croteau at third.

Last season's NAC Rookie of the Year, sophomore Ben Keene, stepped in and singled to second in the next at bat scoring Croteau, but the lone run was all the Beavers could muster.

Husson threatened again in the top of the seventh by loading the bases with no one out, but the Eagles failed to scored after being cut down at home on throws by Wallingford in two straight at bats and popping up for the third out.

Wallingford had a pair of hits for the Beavers in game two, and finished the day with three hits.

Kyle Peterson picked up the loss for the Beavers in six innings after giving up three runs, all earned, on five hits and three walks while striking out two. Bradley Jackson came in for the seventh and thwarted the bases-loaded, nobody-out situation for UMF.

UMaine-Farmington fell to 3-10 overall with the losses, 2-2 in the NAC, while Husson improved to 5-7, 2-3 in conference play. The Beavers continue their April break run of seven games over four days on Thursday, when they will travel to Orono to face the University of Maine. Game time at Mahaney Diamond is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
