Beavers come up short in losses at Gordon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WENHAM, Mass. – Gordon College rallied for a win in game one and kept the University of Maine at Farmington bats in check in game two and came away with a 10-5 and 3-0 sweep of the Beavers, Thursday afternoon at the Gordon College Softball Field.

UMaine-Farmington evened its record at 10-10 overall, while Gordon improved to 12-20.

The Beavers posted three run in the third inning of the first game to take a 3-1 lead, on RBI singles by Emily Soule and Katie Clark and an Amy Jones double that plated Soule.

Gordon responded with an eight-run uprising in the top of the fourth on six hits and five Beaver errors, to take control of the game. Kara Pepper belted a two-run home run to center field early in the frame, and singles by Gabriel Roberts, Alyssa Unumb, and Kendall Bakuras added more runs to Gordon's total.

Kennadi Grover went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run scored, while Alison Hamilton finished with two hits.

Courtney Fowler got the start for the Beavers, and allowed 10 runs, only five of which were earned, on 11 hits. She walked none and struck out four in the loss.

Skylar Bareford yielded 10 hits and five earned runs in the win, striking out five UMF batters.

In game two, UMaine-Farmington got a solid pitching performance from Soule, who allowed just three hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts.

However the Beavers were held to just five hits – one hit in each of the first five innings – and were able to get a runner past first base just twice in the game.

The Fighting Scots scored what proved to be the game-winning runs in the third inning. The frame started when Marissa Meenan got aboard on a base-on-balls, and scored on Bakuras' single. Pepper doubled home Bakuras later in the frame.

Gordon added an insurance run in the sixth, when Roberts sacrificed home Pepper to give the Scots a 3-0 lead.

The Beavers open the final weekend of the regular season on Saturday, April 26, when they host UMaine-Presque Isle at 3:00 p.m. at Prescott Field.
