Husson Breaks UMF's Heart with Game-Winning Goal in Overtime

Box Score

BANGOR, Maine -- In a rematch of last year's North Atlantic Conference Field Hockey Championship, the University of Maine at Farmington (5-2, 1-1) saw nearly the exact outcome of the 1-0 double overtime loss last year by falling, 1-0, in overtime to Husson University (3-5, 2-0) on Saturday at Winkin Athletic Complex.

Libby Kain ended the Beavers' hopes of redeeming the double overtime championship loss to the Eagles with the game-winning goal five minutes into the overtime period. UMF's defense was pushed to the test with five shots in the extra period, including Kain's game winner.

UMF had two penalty corners in a 15-second span early in the first half and fired two shots on goal, but both shots came up empty-handed with a save and a block by the Husson defense.

Patty Smith set a new season-high with 21 saves in the outing. Smith has recorded 49 saves in her last two games against Husson.

UMaine-Farmington looks to bounce back on Tuesday at Bowdoin, who is ranked number two in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Coaches Poll.
